Careless Driving - Careless Driving Penalties

As with most driving offences the fine attached to a Careless Driving ticket is not the only penalty for the offence. A Careless Driving ticket has the following different penalties.

Six demerit points
A fine of three hundred and twenty five dollars ($490.00)
A conviction registered on your driving record for three years
Mandatory 30 day licence suspension for G1 and G2 drivers
Serious insurance consequences and increases - Major Insurance conviction
For serious Careless Driving offences the prosecutor can ask for;
A fine up to one thousand dollars ($1000.00)
A prison term of not more than six months
A drivers licence suspension of up to two years
Suspension of the permit for the motor vehicle for up to two years

For careless driving there are also serious insurance implications including cancellation of your insurance policy, or your insurance rates can be raised thousands of dollars per year.

A conviction for careless driving stays on your driving record for 3 years, insurance companies may keep a careless driving conviction on their records for even longer.
